VEGETARIANISM AND ETHICS

Ethical Issues that direct many people to a vegetarian / vegan life style include:

  • Factory Farming  Farm animals today are often raised under abhorrent conditions.  Over 35 million beef cattle and more than 10 billion chickens are slaughtered in the industry each year.  For more information about factory farming, please visit www.factoryfarming.com and http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/animals.html.

  • Animal Testing  It's been estimated that as many as 70 million animals a year are used for medical research and testing consumer products.  Much of the research is extremely cruel and painful, but continues.  This is despite the fact that it has been repeatedly demonstrated that non-human animals are not good models for humans. For more information about animal testing please visit http://www.guardian.co.uk and http://www.peta.org/mc/facts/fsae1.html.

  • Environmental Impacts Raising animals for food has severe environmental impacts, ranging from problems with waste disposal, to the exponential increase in the destruction of natural lands for growing food to feed factory farmed animals.  For more information on the environmental impacts of a meat-based diet, please visit http://www.peta.org.uk/feat/UKvegkit/environment.asp.

  • Caring About Animals  Many people love and care about all animals, and do not feel comfortable "eating the object of their affection".  The VRGT works in cooperation with the Humane Society, which is very active in our community in finding homes for animals, and working tirelessly to help reduce the "unwanted" animal population through spay and neuter programs.  Did you know that 5-6 million animals are euthanised each  year in this country?  Please feel free to visit the Humane Society of Southern Arizona website.
